After burying Ramesses XI, he succeeded him, but only in Lower Egypt, a territory which he controlled. The High Priests of Amun at Thebes effectively controlled Upper Egypt. His Egyptian name was actually Nisubanebdjed, but it was transcribed into ancient Greek as Smendes.
