Seti II was the son of Merenptah and a grandson of the great Ramesses II. He succeeded his father on the throne, but his reign was complicated by a rival king, Amenmesse, who seized power in Upper Egypt and Nubia sometime between years 2 and 4 of Seti II's reign. This usurper was eventually dealt with.
