The second pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty
Prenomen: Menmaatra
Also known as: Sethos I · Sety I
Accession 1290 BC
End of reign 1279 BC
Duration 11 years
Highest attested year Year 11
Seti I imitated Thutmose III’s Horus name by using the same one, but adding -sankhtawy, “sustaining the Two Lands,” to it. He confronted the Hittites several times in battle and reconquered most of the disputed territories, but the Hittites remained a potential danger to Egypt.
His splendid Mortuary Temple at Abydos contain more than thirty Horus names, but they were probably only used in the specific rituals. Seti was only in his thirties when he died suddenly, after only ruling for little more than a decade. Although the Abydos temple was partially complete, it was completed by his son, Ramesses II.
